The museum’s lease on its current location is still good for another year

Construction has officially begun on the brand new building that will house the International Spy Museum. According to a press release, the facility is expected to deliver by the spring of 2018. The museum’s lease on its current location at 800 F Street NW won’t end until 2017.

Below, you will be able to read the project’s description from the press release:

Design features include a glass "veil" suspended in front of an enclosed "black box" exhibition space that will allow the movement of people to be visible from both inside and outside, contributing to new energy along 10th Street. This sense of veil and black box reflects the Museum’s espionage-related themes of secrets revealed and hiding in plain sight. The new building significantly expands exhibit and educational space and adds an intimate theater along with unique event spaces.

The architect for the project is Hickok Cole Architects with designs from London-based architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. The developer is the JBG Companies.

The International Spy Museum's lease at 800 F Street NW will end in 2017, and all eyes are set on L'Enfant Plaza for the next location. According to Washington Business Journal, the Museum is considering a 100,000-square-foot, six-story building at 900 L'Enfant Plaza. The $100 million building features three times the special event space the current location has, a rooftop terrace, open air plaza, and expanded exhibit space. Whether or not the L'Enfant Plaza location is the final choice is still up in the air as Museum officials hope to keep their options open in case the Commission of Fine Arts doesn't approve their plans on April 16. Before settling on L'Enfant Plaza, the International Spy Museum considered Dupont Underground or the Carnegie Library as new locations.
· International Spy Museum pitches new location [Washington Business Journal]
· International Spy Museum Looks to Move to L'Enfant Plaza [Curbed DC]
· Preservation League Fighting for 2014 Most Endangered Places [Curbed DC]

While Dupont Underground was in the running as a possible location for the International Spy Museum, it looks like all eyes are on L'Enfant Plaza. No leases have been signed yet, but The Washington Post reports that the company is "focused on making a deal work." While there is no certainty on the exact location the museum may move to, the location may be a $46 million renovated space of underground shops and retail in L'Enfant Plaza. It's apparent that museum officials aren't too afraid to head underground as the 75,000-square-foot subterranean space underneath Dupont Circle was of interest. By moving into the underground space in L'Enfant Plaza, though, the museum would have access to about 30,000 commuters every weekday. The previous location the museum was set on was the Carnegie Library, a National Historic Landmark that had to be given up due to plans for major expansions to the building. The lease for the current location of the International Spy Museum at 800 F Street, NW will end 2017.

The International Spy Museum needs a new location, and it may be thinking of going into more mysterious, underground places. One location that museum officials toured was Dupont Underground, the 75,000-square-foot subterranean space underneath the streets of Washington, D.C. There have not been any official statements on any decisions in the making, but that has not stopped media sources from making suggestions for new locations. Recently, Carnegie Library was in the running to be the new location for the International Spy Museum, but any plans to to expand the building were struck down due to it being a National Historic Landmark. Museum officials hope to be move-in ready for a new location by early- to mid- 2017 when its lease at 800 F Street, NW ends that same year.
