The Southeast underdog claims the title once again

The annual competition, the Curbed Cup, has allowed Washington, D.C. neighborhoods to compete since 2011. With winners ranging from Navy Yard to Petworth to Capitol Hill, there has yet to be a two-time champion. Finally, Anacostia can say that it has won the Curbed Cup not only in the year 2012, but also 2016.

For the 2016 Curbed Cup, Anacostia won 65.68 percent of the votes against competitor Capitol Hill. There were a total of 370 votes for the final poll.

By winning, this means that Anacostia is awarded bragging rights as well as the super prestigious (also fake) trophy, known as the Curbed Cup. It also means that the public truly sees the neighborhood as more than just a place perfect for eating, hanging out, and expecting big developments.

Local blog Congress Heights on the Rise said it best with this: “There are so many things to love about Anacostia: the historic homes, the arts district, the small business owners, the Anacostia BID, and, of course, the wonderful people of Anacostia.”

If interested in learning more about the neighborhood, be sure to check out all of the content from 2016’s Anacostia Week, a week-long series of articles focused on the neighborhood after readers chose it as the perfect neighborhood to concentrate on.

Congratulations again to Anacostia, and great job to Capitol Hill as well for making it to second place.

For those looking forward to the next Curbed Cup, expect it again this year in December.

The finals are here—vote for D.C.’s neighborhood of the year!

Finally, it’s down to the final two neighborhoods for Curbed’s super prestigious and also fake trophy, the Curbed Cup. Since the competition began this year, 2,595 readers have responded to polls asking them one simple question: Which neighborhood deserves to top them all?

What makes a neighborhood better than another? That’s not up to Curbed to decide, but up to the readers.

For this final period of voting, pollsters will have until the end of January 2 to determine which of the final two they prefer. The winner will be announced January 3.

Anacostia is one of the most affordable neighborhoods in the District. Last year, the neighborhood had some of the lowest rents with a median $910/month cost for a one-bedroom, while the city-wide median was $2,110/month.
Georgetown is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the District. Established in 1751, the area is known as one of the city's most sought after shopping centers. Some of the most well-known former residents includeJulia Child and John F.
The neighborhood also features the city's teeny tinest abode as well as the Old Stone House, Washington, D.C.'s oldest building.

Some of the minuses to this neighborhood could include the lack of parking, narrow sidewalks, and maybe the fact that its one of the most touristy destinations in the city. The fact that the neighborhood is also home to Georgetown University could also cause this Curbed Cup contender to become a frontrunner or a bit of a bummer to certain Curbed readers.

The neighborhood is also home to the District's tiniest home.

While Woodridge topped Redfin’s list last year for hottest D.C. neighborhood of the year, 16th Street Heights made second place for Redfin’s list this year. In this quiet suburban area, visitors can find brick rowhouses, semi-detached Tudors, and colonials. Rock Creek Park is also nearby along with the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation.

Recently, flipping has been a common sight in the neighborhood. Earlier this year, this renovated six-bedroom listing sold for $1.285 million, more than double than what it previously sold for in December 2015, which was $555,000.

Anacostia is one of the most affordable neighborhoods in the District. Last year, the neighborhood had some of the lowest rents with a median $910/month cost for a one-bedroom, while the city-wide median was $2,110/month. Despite this, the cost of living in the neighborhood has grown tremendously with a 21 percent jump in median home price in the year 2014.

Despite this, there are quite a few highlights to the area, such as the Anacostia Arts Center, the Frederick Douglass National Historic site, the world's largest chair, and the fact that it has had famous residents like the late Mayor Marion Barry.

In the next few years, look out for the redevelopment of the Anacostia Playhouse, a new Busboys & Poets, and the redevelopment of the MLK Gateway. One day, the neighborhood will also be home to Washington, D.C.'s first elevated park.

The mixed-use development features 720 residences, 83,000-square-feet of street-level retail, and 20,000-square-feet of amenity space spread out over three total buildings. With this development, a new community for artists was created with studios and a community arts center. Earlier this year, a new “arts park” also completed construction.
