This will be a demonstration project in order to teach students technical skills

After winning an American Institute of Architects (AIA) award in June 2015, it seems like everyone wants to have a piece of Minim House, a 212-square-foot residence that has been featured in news outlets like Dwell, ABC, CBS, and HGTV. UrbanTurf now reports that the D.C. Department of Community and Housing Development (DHCD) has partnered with the D.C. Students Construction Trades Foundation to allow students in the District to build a Minim House in Deanwood’s 1100 block of 50th Place NE.

There are no reports yet on the timeline of this project, though a demonstration is expected to begin this spring. This isn’t the first time students in Washington, D.C., have learned technical skills through building a tiny home. In December 2016, students at the Academy of Construction and Design (ACAD) at IDEA Public Charter School in Northeast Washington, D.C., constructed their first micro house with proceeds from the sale of the structure reinvested in the academy’s skilled trades classes and training programs. This new tiny home project will also be performed by students at ACAD.

Don’t get your hopes up on the prospect of a new tiny home community getting formed in the District. In an interview with UrbanTurf, DHCD Communications Director Gwen Cofield said, “While the tiny home is just a demonstration project and does not reflect a formal policy decision, it provides a great opportunity to see how tiny homes can fit into the D.C. landscape.”

When it comes to Minim House, it uses a 960 watt solar panel and a system that captures and treats up to 290 gallons of water. The structure is built out of untreated, shiplapped cypress and structural insulated panels. Inside, visitors can find a 10-foot galley kitchen, full-size bed, and walnut desk that can open and reveal an electric piano. The small residence was designed by Foundry Architects.

This project is part of the city’s Vacant to Vibrant initiative.

This “mini-demi-pseudo-sillyhouse” is back on the market

Lovers of everything itty bitty are sure to fall for this 252-square-foot single-family home in Capitol Hill. Asking $1,400 per month, this is Washington, D.C.’s smallest home, measuring 9.5 feet wide and 28 feet long.

With this in mind, the listing doesn’t hesitate to emphasize just how cramped it is. It describes itself as “THE SMALLEST, TINIEST, DINKIEST, MOST RIDICULOUS, ABSURD, MINI-DEMI-PSEUDO-SILLYHOUSE IN WASHINGTON.”

In 2009, Washington Post columnist and American two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gene Weingarten took a tour of the home. He wrote that the structure was built around 1920, was once "some sort of shop," and "[stood] out from the other houses on the block like a Barbie doll in a police lineup."

Inside, there is surprisingly a washer and dryer, a renovated bathroom, security system, and a kitchen with new tile, a microwave, stove, fridge, and a sink. There is also off-street parking and a deep backyard.

The tenant pays for all utilities, except for water/sewer and yard service. No pets are allowed.

The startup, Getaway, currently has locations near Boston and New York City

Just a couple hours from Washington, D.C., there are plans to build 20 brand new tiny homes with the hope for city folks to be able to escape from the city and their electronic devices and instead relax in the nature in the Shenandoah Valley.

With hopes to expand further over the next few years, the 20 tiny homes will be located across approximately 80 acres of land. With this, the intent is to make sure that each renter has their own privacy.

There will be two- and four-person cabins. The four-person cabins will have two beds stacked atop each other. In the bathrooms, they will all come with a toilet, shower, and shower products. There will also be a fully-equipped kitchen in each with a stove, sink, running water, pots, and pans. Also, expect pour-over coffee and utensils provided as well as a fire pit and a picnic table nearby.

Founded in 2015, the Getaway startup has since expanded near New York City and Boston. The company is led by Harvard MBA student Jon Staff and Harvard Law student Peter Davis.

In a statement, Staff said, “At Getaway, we believe your nature routine is just as important as your workout routine. As we considered where to establish our third location, we had a lot of folks reach out to us from D.C., and are excited to now be able to offer them an easy escape."

In a phone interview, Curbed DC was told that Getaway doesn’t necessarily consider themselves a hotel brand, despite their tiny homes being able to be rented on a nightly basis.

What makes each Getaway location unique is not necessarily the tiny homes that are found there, but the nature that is nearby. It’s less about the destination and really more about the experience. In fact, the exact location of each tiny home will not be revealed until a renter has solidified their reservation.

Currently, the “intro rate” for the D.C. area tiny homes start at $125 per night. This rate will end on October 9, and it will increase. It was not confirmed to Curbed DC what the increased rate will be.

Whether or not Getaway will expand near other cities still remains to be seen. It will all depend on what demand there is and what might fit the needs for the business. At the moment, it’s still too early to disclose where the business hopes to expand next.

Will the tiny home rentals eventually come to D.C. proper? Well, that’s not possible because, from a brand and business standpoint, the whole point of Getaway is to avoid the city, to escape into nature.

For those who want to try out tiny living, there are other great options across the nation also worth checking out.

Still only an idea, not a reality

WMATA is saying goodbye to its least reliable railcars, and one D.C. architect has an idea for how to use them rather than trash them.

Arthur Cotton Moore told The Washington Post that he has already sketched out his idea to add prefab kitchenettes and bathrooms to each car in order to transform them into tiny homes for the homeless. Each car would be able to produce a pair of 560-square-foot, one-bedroom apartments.

While Moore hopes the tiny home design could be used to help the homeless, there are still some hurdles that need to be crossed before his idea can become a reality. For one, some cars contain asbestos.

Already, though, WMATA spokesman Dan Stessel told The Washington Post that he would consider the proposal.

“Just as we are providing decommissioned rail cars upon request to emergency responders in the region for training purposes, Metro will consider any viable proposal for other uses of the cars, provided that it is budget neutral to Metro and complies with all applicable laws, regulations, etc.,” said Stessel.

Step one: Take this workshop

Already, Washington, D.C. is known for being a fairly short city, but there are homes in the District that are not just small, but itty bitty. For those interested in taking a shot at building or living in a tiny home, members of the Tiny House Collaborative are hosting a workshop with hands-on activities, tours, and a Q&A.

Some of the topics that will be discussed at the event include budget and construction of building a tiny home, framing and basic building techniques, and layout considerations and design tricks.

The two-day event will be held on March 18 and 19 at the Catholic University of America. For a single person, the cost of the event is $399. For two people, it costs $700.

That’s $1,500 per square foot for what might be Bethesda’s smallest single-family home

Usually, tiny homes are constructed as a way to show how homeowners can be economical with their space. They’re also typically temporary living spaces that are made to be more affordable to the everyday homebuyer. For some reason, this Bethesda tiny home seems to have forgotten that.

With one bedroom and one bathroom across 315 square feet of space, this single-family home is on the market for $459,000. Washingtonian did the math, and that equates to nearly $1,500 per square foot, way over Bethesda’s average of $423 per square foot.

The listing dates back to 1940 when it was built as a cabin. Inside, there is a washer and dryer somehow crammed inside along with a stove and oven, sink, and upper level that leads to a living room and loft area. Off-street parking is available.
