Although the average rental in Columbia Heights has transitioned in the past seven years from "decently affordable" to "too damn high," owning in the popular nabe isn't nearly as outrageous. The skinny: Actually, as far as basement apartments go, this one gets a fair amount of light. If you want the parking space half a block away, that will be an extra $26,000.

The skinny: This basement apartment is right next door to the other one. While not as aesthetically pleasing, it is also well-lit for a basement and far less cramped.
