There's a show called Scandal that's based in our fair city, but sometimes the true nefarious acts inspire (and are stranger than) the fictitious ones. As it happens, many of the most famous of these acts happened in hotels. Of course, much of this map was drawn from last year's list, but new jaw dropping events have happened in the past year and others from the past have come to light. Take a look and see if the place where you stayed has some unsavory history.

The Westin Washington, D.C. City Center (The Vista Hotel)

Notable name: Marion Barry
This was the site of a Mayor For Life crack arrest and although it's one that got dropped, the Vista Hotel as it was called at the time was the location of the famous, "Bitch set me up" remark that he directed toward his girlfriend at the time. Photo by David King.

W Washington D.C.

Notable names: Chris Brown & Dominique Strauss-Kahn
The R&B singer with the short temper got into a fight with another man at the always lively hour of 4:30 a.m. this past October outside of the hotel and got brought up on assault charges.

Meanwhile, the disgraced former IMF chief was accused of gang raping a Belgian woman in December 2010. That allegation was later dropped. Photo by Flickr user NCinDC.

The Hay-Adams Hotel

Notable name: Lt. Col. Oliver North
Although North himself didn't have any seedy dealings that led to the funding of the Iran Contra operation, his fundraiser Carl Channell sure did. Photo by Wally Gobetz.

Hotel Helix (Ramada Inn Central)

Notable name: Marion Barry
Before Kimpton took over this boutique hotel, the Ramada Inn Central was the spot where the former mayor bought crack from city employee Charles Lewis.

The Watergate

Notable Name: Richard Nixon
Probably everyone knows the story about the break-in heard round the world and how it led to the resignation of President Nixon. The hotel not called Watergate worth mentioning here is the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge where investigators monitored the phone calls of the Democratic party. The HoJo is now at GW dorm. The Willard Intercontinental

Notable name: Ulysses S. Grant
While there are no specific incidents tied to this hotel, Grant used to sit and talk to politicians and businessmen in the lobby of this hotel. Hence the term, "lobbying." Photo by John Riviello.

Grand Hyatt Washington

Notable Name: Marion Barry (last time...promise!)
How many hotels can possibly be drawn to Marion Barry and crack? (answer: four) This was the place where he beat up then-girlfriend Hazel Diane "Rasheeda" Moore, aka, the "bitch" that set him up. Photo by Ginny Wu.

Washington Hilton

Notable name: Ronald Regan
For once, the President mentioned was not engaged in nefarious goings-on. He just had the misfortune of being outside and getting shot.Photo by Ted Eytan

The Jefferson Hotel

Notable name: Dick Morris
Actually, this probably isn't a notable name, so here's the breakdown. This Bill Clinton advisor and now Fox News employee was discovered with a prostitute in this location.

The Mayflower Renaissance Washington, DC Hotel

Notable names: Monica Lewinsky and Elliot Spitzer
Not only did President Bill Clinton have sexual relations with intern Monica Lewinsky, but she stayed in this hotel during that time. Meanwhile, former governor and current talking head Spitzer spent a night with a very expensive prostitute here. These are not the only people to have done seedy things here, but they are the two most prominent. Photo by Fredo Alvarez.

Holiday Inn Express and Suites

Notable Name: Khalil Malik Tatum
Earlier this week, the FBI released a video showing that the man suspected in the abduction of missing 8-year-old Relisha Rudd was seen with the girl walking through the hallway. As such, this is by far the most depressing entry on this map. Photo via Orbitz.
