There is already a lot to see and do in Anacostia, from the Frederick Douglass house to the Anacostia Community Museum. In the next few years, there will be even more retail and restaurant options as well as Washington, D.C.'s first elevated bridge park. There are some proposed developments, such as a casino, that may not end up happening.

This $45 million project is slated to deliver by mid-2019 with designs from OMA +OLIN. This project will transform the freeway bridge over the Anacostia River into an elevated park and new civic space. Expect areas for performances, public art, kayak and canoe launches, as well as an environmental education center.

In the summer of 2017, Busboys & Poets will move into the Southeast neighborhood. Originally, the opening date was set for 2016. On the second floor of the space will be a training area for culinary students.

Currently, gambling in Washington, D.C. is illegal, so this is one of those developments that is still up in the air ... way up in the air. To make this casino a reality, the Citizens Committee in Support of the Limited Gaming Initiative of 2016 is collecting signatures in the effort for the "Limited Gaming Initiative of 2016" to appear on the ballot in November. At that point, voters may or may not reject the initiative. If approved and if the casino is made, it won't house slot machines, but card games like poker and blackjack. The three connected properties at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard SE and Good Hope Road SE will be connected to create the facility.

Eight lots along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE will be combined to create a brand new 130-unit mixed-use development, called Reunion Square. With a groundbreaking slated for late 2016, this project will combine eight lots and will demolish a print shop addition at 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE, a one-story accessory addition to 2007 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE, and the Anacostia Playhouse. The Anacostia Playhouse will be rebuilt as part of the new development. This project will span a total of six blocks with 126 apartments and six townhouses.

This project will house 71 residential units, 80 percent of which will be reserved for those making up to 60 percent of the area median income. Some units will be reserved for teachers and artists. There is no firm timeline yet, but UrbanTurf reported that the project will deliver by 2017.

This Anacostia building may be vacant, but it's loved by residents for its iconic "Anacostia" sign. Currently, there are plans to redevelop the property into a Walgreens. There are no reports yet as to whether or not the sign will remain.

There is no definite proposal just yet for the vacant parcel at 1909 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE and the vacant lot and storefronts at 1201-1215 Good Hope Road SE, but the D.C. government did release a Request for Proposals for the sites. The plan is for small to medium scaled commercial and mixed-use developments. For a developer to submit a proposal, they will have to utilize both sites on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE and Good Hope Road SE.
