After two years of being located on the 300 block of 7th Street SE, Eastern Market’s outdoor weekend flea market will return to Hine School’s plaza this fall. An exact date of opening has not yet been pinned down.
Both Saturday’s Capitol Hill Flea Market and Sunday’s The Flea Market at Eastern Market signed three-year lease agreements to relocate to 50 flea market exhibit spaces along C Street SE.
Some of the new amenities that will be featured include Dutch-style flush curbs, decorative iron tree pit grates, outlets in tree boxes for lighting, and discounted parking for vendors.
In a statement, Carole Wright, who operates Saturday’s Capitol Hill Flea Market, said, “We are thrilled to return to the plaza. This move will allow us to once again operate as an open-air market, not as a street fair.”
At the moment, the Hine School is being redeveloped into a mixed-use development with 156,000 square feet of office space, 162 apartments (46 affordable units), and 60,000 square feet of specialty shops, boutiques, and restaurants. The Hine School redevelopment is expected to achieve LEED Gold and Silver certifications. The project was originally set to deliver by June of 2017.
