The original opening date for Adams Morgan’s newest luxury pet hotel, called Life of Riley, was slated for March of 2017, but before long the date was moved to June 1. Now, it looks like the hotel won’t open until late August or early September of this year.
The lease on the new space at 2222 18th Street NW was signed in October 2016 with approval from the Board of Zoning Adjustment achieved in February 2017. In an email to Curbed DC, Paul Abbott of Life of Riley said that the remodel is already 95 percent complete.
What’s causing the hold up is that Pepco collapsed a conduit under the parking lane in front of the building. Since then, Pepco and their contractors have yet to repair the conduit, and there is still no set timeline from Pepco on the repair.
Abbott told Curbed DC, “As it stands, our remodel, inspections, hiring, and training are all on hold and at the mercy of Pepco.”
He added, “When we do get electricity service, we can apply our finishing touches in a matter of days.”
In anticipation of the opening of the business, Abbott started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to “alleviate the additional debt we have had to take on in order to pay our builders on time” and to give customers the option to prepay for their services at a discounted rate. The campaign ended this Monday unsuccessfully with $2,720 raised, which is under the $5,000 goal.
When Life of Riley began in 2013, it was a dog walking business that served Rockville, Potomac, and Bethesda in Maryland. The first brick-and-mortar location opened in Rockville, Maryland, in March 2015 with 12 custom-designed dog hotel suites and extra doses of luxury found through heated flooring and crystal chandeliers. There is also a grooming and chauffeur service included.
The staff for the Adams Morgan location have already been hired and are currently undergoing training in the Rockville, Maryland, location, according to Abbott.
