Adams Morgan Payless store may become 80-unit mixed-use project

For some, the addition may be too dissimilar to the existing structure

At 1773-1777 Columbia Road NW, there are plans for a six-story, mixed-use project that will take the place of a Payless shoe store, reported UrbanTurf. The proposal for the Adams Morgan project will preserve the one-story commercial facades, while adding 80 apartments and over 9,500 square feet of retail.

Despite the plan to preserve the existing facades, the neighborhood’s ANC still expressed concern about the design. According to UrbanTurf, “Several people pointed out that the combination of color, materiality and modernity made the appended portion of the building look stark in contrast to the rest of the neighborhood.”

In response to the concerns, the architect proposed a different color scheme for the development.

On the residential units, they will range from studios to one-bedrooms. There will also be 30 below-grade parking spaces.

The delivery for the project is slated for Q3 2018.
