Ballston bar to be replaced by 330-unit apartment building

The bar, Carpool, will remain open through “at least the end of November”

In order to make room for a new 22-story apartment building in Ballston, a popular bar, called Carpool, is slated to close in the next few months, as reported by ARLnow. The sale of the bar closed this past Friday.

The bar, located at 4000 Fairfax Drive, will remain open "through at least the end of November," Carpool Co-owner Mark Handwerger said to ARLnow. The owners are searching for a new location. In Herndon, there is already a second location.

In December 2015, the Arlington County Board unanimously approved the development by Penzance. The project will house 330 units with 8,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and 264 parking spaces. The adjacent site at 4040 Fairfax Drive, where the Webb office building stands, will be combined with the development to create a single 515,000-square-foot building. The building is expected to attain LEED Gold certification.
