Historicity and modernity mix well in this $1.9M Georgetown home

The ‘Mule House’ has been totally transformed

In a quiet, fairly hidden block of Georgetown, the historic residence, known as the "Mule House," is on the market for $1,995,000. From the outside, the c. 1890-built home looks like any other typical red brick home on the block sans window shutters. On the inside, it’s a modern dreamboat with beamed ceilings, exposed stone walls, and a high-end stainless steel appliances. One quality that this two-bedroom listing has that are a little uncommon for the area is its off-street parking. It’s also zoned commercial as well as residential.

The owner, Alex Alperstein, purchased the property in 2014 and later approached Rockville-based general contractor JEFFCO Development with the hopes to gut and completely renovate the property. JEFFCO also worked with award-winning architecture firm Christian Zapatka to design the space.

Part of the renovation process involved tearing down a dilapidated addition on the back of the house in order to construct a new, two-story addition there. According to JEFFCO’s blog, the facade was "cleaned up." The beamed ceilings are original oak hewn beams removed from various parts of the house during demolition. The front windows were refurbished, and all of the mechanical electrical plumbing is now new.

"We want people to feel the history and age of the structure without sacrificing the functionality and efficiency of a new home," was written on JEFFCO’s blog.

The home was named the Mule House because mules used to live inside it. When the C&O Canal once served as a transportation source for industries like limestone, coal, whiskey, and wood, mules would pull the barge up and down the canal.
