On Wednesday, groundbreaking began on the brand new Marvin Gaye Recreation Center and Trail located at 6201 Banks Place NE that is set to deliver by the fall of 2017.
The $12.29 million project will total 7,200 square feet with a two-story facility housing a fitness room, music room, outdoor NBA-sized basketball court, and two outdoor high school-sized basketball courts. There will also be a teen area, senior room, computer lab, and community room.
Along with the new recreation facility, there will also be improvements made to one of the longest trails under the purview of D.C. Government, the Marvin Gaye Trail. Once improvements are complete, the trail will feature a community garden, splash pad, fitness station, and new plantings, according to the Executive Office of the Mayor website.
The project involved demolishing the existing field house.
