The development, titled 13/U, is set to become the newest apartment building in the U Street neighborhood. Designed by David M. Schwarz Architects, this brick building will total eight stories with 129 apartments, 15,750-square-feet of retail, and a below-grade parking garage. Prices for the apartments have yet to be determined, but The Washington Post reported that there will be both market-rate and affordable units. Some of the amenities will include a fitness center, sundeck, and club room. The developer JBG Cos. will also provide $600,000 for community benefits with funds for new recreational fields at Garrison Elementary, a play space at Westminster Place, and a new Capital Bikeshare station, as reported by The Washington Post. It took five years of planning for JBG Cos. to receive final approval from the D.C. Zoning Commission to move forward with the project. Original plans for the development were to construct a 250-room hotel. The site previously housed a Rite-Aid pharmacy.
