Del. Norton Proposes Two Navy Yard Sites for Marine Housing

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton is pushing for the U.S. Marine Corps to receive new housing on federal land as opposed to privately owned or leased sites. If the housing is built on the latter sites, she believes there will be "significant negative impacts" due to "almost no land left for development." The U.S. Marine Corps is currently considering five locations between 5th and 11 streets SE for a "Bachelor Enlisted Quarters" that will replace existing housing at 8th and I streets SE. Hill Now reported that Norton highly recommended two sites for the new housing, one site within the boundaries of the Washington Navy Yard and one site within the the Marine Barracks Annex property. The three privately owned or leased sites the U.S. Marine Corps is considering include one site west of the Washington Navy Yard and two sites adjacent to the Virginia Avenue Park.
