Last Monday, three Metro lines were shut down due to smoke in the tunnels, and WMATA wants to make sure that never happens again. The plan is to keep tunnels clear of dust and grime and clean the electrical equipment. Apparently, the Metro used to do this, but the practice was halted in the early 1990s. [WaPo]
