A "catalytic addition" to the Union Market building was unanimously approved by the D.C. Zoning Commission on Monday. Developer Edens plans on placing a 42,000-square-foot Angelika Film Center and four stories, or 112,000-square-feet, of office or residential space on top of the market building. The development for 1309-1329 5th Street NE will also include a market and plaza behind the building and a park in front of it. Urban Turf reported that the sign that reads, "Union Market," will also be relocated to the theater level of the building on the 5th Street side. For the second phase of the project, Edens hopes to replace a warehouse at 1329 5th Street NE with a 350,000-square-foot mixed-use building, according to Washington Business Journal. The film center is expected to open by September 1, 2016.
