The barren 75,000-square-foot tunnel, Dupont Underground, will one day be available for rent for performances, art installations, and concerts. The long term plan is still up in the air, but ideas brought up include a winery, gallery, restaurant, and a 40-unit micro-hotel, as reported by Urban Turf. If a hotel is chosen, it would become the first underground hotel in the United States.
Since December 2014, Dupont Underground has been under a 66-month lease by nonprofit Arts Coalition for the Dupont Underground (ACDU). ACDU is currently working with the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs to clean up the space before raising more money for renovations. Urban Turf reported that ACDU expects their plans for the space to be approved within the next few months.
