Cornerspotted: Police and Fire Call Boxes in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations to the two commenters who guessed correctly what the red and blue points on this 1880 map are. DC3 not only guessed correctly that the points indicate police and fire call boxes, but also provided a link to an article that gives insight into the history of the boxes as well. The House History Man blog reported that there are over 875 boxes in the District and that many have been scraped and painted for a project led by Cultural Tourism DC. The "Art on Call" project came with the help of bronze sculptor Michael Ross who decorated nine call boxes in Historic Mount Pleasant with his artworks.
