The walk from one side of the National Mall to the other is going be much, much longer. Visitors are going to have to stay off the grass for the next 18 months or so due to turf restoration. The closure will be between 7th and 12th street and will affect Jefferson and Madison drives.
The project will involve excavation and removal of damaged soil, installation of irrigation drainage, and a 250,000 gallon cistern to collect and reuse storm water. The turf that will be installed will be similar to the kind on athletic fields by being compaction resistant.
