The original Liberty Bell sits behind glass in that other major mid-Atlantic city up I-95, but D.C. has its own replica at Union Station. The American Legion Freedom Bell has been sitting next to the massive fountain at Columbus Circle since 1981. The eight ton bell is actually over twice the size of the famous one in Philadelphia and the heavy thing actually traveled the country in 1975 as part of a celebration of the Bicentennial. The American Legion were reportedly displeased that their Bicentennial gift ultimately touched down at Union Station and not on the National Mall.
