Eastern Market Owes the City Almost $400K in Unpaid Rent

Good landlord, that's a lot of money! Washington Business Journal reports that Eastern Market didn't renew contracts with a number of their merchants after they expired in 2008...which in contract terms is an eternity ago. This is a particularly problematic for the enormous Capitol Hill fresh food haven because they'd failed to pay attention to the fine print wherein merchants would need to pay double rent until new contracts are worked out. Oops. Now Eastern Market owes the city $386,498 and that's just in unpaid rent from 2011 and 2012. Stay tuned to this space as we look to see if Eastern Market's problems go even deeper.
