Goodbye Brutalist Church, Hello Glass Office Building

Some considered the Brutalist Third Church of Christ, Scientist an eyesore while others found it a nice break from the glass office buildings around Farragut Square, but either way, it certainly stood out. The church has only been a pile of concrete dust for about a month, but a new building will break ground tomorrow in its old space at 900 16th Street NW. This building, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects and Cooper Carry Inc. shows a greater sense of continuity with its surroundings. That is to say, it's a tall glass office building that will house law firm Miller & Chevalier and offer sweet views of the White House. However, if the destruction of a house of worship hits a sour note, rest easy. The Third Church of Christ, Scientist will retain 12,000 square feet of the property so that they can rebuild their church — probably in a manner that's not nasty, Brutalist and short.
