There are eight Kimpton hotels in D.C. and two of them, Donovan House and Hotel Monaco, are on this edition of Curbed's eighteen essential D.C. hotels. However, an additional three were featured in this more comprehensive list of thirty-eight essential hotels and one of those, the Hotel George, just got a $5 million makeover.

The boutique hotel, one of D.C.'s first, has always been a beacon of modern style near Union Station. After all, the fitness center includes yoga mats and the hotel even welcomes pets! However, following a refresh of the lobby and living room areas in 2012, Hotel George also re-did the 139 guest rooms, hallways and elevator banks. Sure, there were already Warhol-esque paintings of the first president, but as of late January, there are now pillows that mimic George Washington's uniform and calligraphic wallpaper with his inaugural address. The difference is visible in the before/after photo above and there are more close-ups of the renovation after the jump. Do take a look.
