When architect Scott Bromley first visited the Pines, Fire Island's legendary gay enclave, in the 1960s, most houses were "beach shacks"—rare was the house that had a phone line or washing machine. But architect Horace Gifford soon began to create a new kind of "beach modernism" with low-tech wood-and-glass houses. Bromley, inspired by Gifford's work, began dabbling in Pines renovations—and today he is the area's go-to architect. Curbed National tours his projects, right this way. [Curbed National]
