Baby Steps for Southeast DHS $4.5B Mega Renovation

The next phase of the Department of Homeland Security's consolidation at St. Elizabeths is underway with a new hand-picked team by the General Services Administration. A $139 million design-build contract was awarded to Grunley Construction Co. and Shalom Baranes Association to renovate the 270,000-square-foot Center Building in Southeast D.C.

Since its proposal, the $4.5 billion project has encountered numerous congressional funding issues despite being considered "critical" by lawmakers for national security. The GSA and DHS are working with lawmakers to pay for the remaining phases of the consolidation.

The Center Building will house the Office of the Secretary of Homeland Security with an estimated date of completion in 2017.
