While today a trip to Tenleytown might signal a need for new camera batteries or DVDs, in the 1940s, this was a Sears and the go-to spot for school shopping and meeting Santa Claus. In between its transition from a Sears to a composite of Best Buy, The Container Store, Ace's Hardware and condos, this spot was a Hechinger's. The building's architecture on the corner of Wisconsin and Albemarle actually isn't terribly different. Notice that the canopy, while not as prominent, is still there.
