The Monuments That Could Have Been: The Early Proposals

The monuments on the National Mall are so burned into our consciousness that it may be hard to imagine them looking any different. Still...they could have. The Lincoln Memorial could have been a pyramid instead of a temple. The Washington Monument could have been more of a pole than an obelisk. The Memorial Bridge could have been more reminiscent of the Lord of the Rings landscape with its two towers.
