American (Backup) Dream Shifts from Silver Spring to Jersey

New, 6 comments

So, does anyone remember back in the mid-1990s when Triple Five, the company responsible for Mall of America wanted to build a $585 million mall/theme park in Silver Spring called The American Dream? Remember how the Ghermezian brothers pulled the plug on the American Dream once they were unable to secure private financing? Well, apparently, the Dream is not dead...it's just moving to the Meadowlands. Although the previous megaprojects of Triple Five's in (among other places) Niagara Falls, Beijing, Leeds and yeah, Silver Spring all went up in smoke, Governor Chris Christie has given them the go ahead to get moving on the development at an old failed site with a similar ambition. Meanwhile, without the American Dream, downtown Silver Spring has become quite the redevelopment success story. Should we warn him?
