Welcome to Racked DC where we dig deep into the retail world and let you know about the latest happenings in fashion and shopping. Know of something interesting coming to town? Send the news into our tipline.
DC—Ladies, if you want to revamp your wardrobe, but you're on a budget, DewDropDC is something to consider. Here's the concept: You bring 5 items from your closet, and you swap it out for new to gently-used accessories, shoes, and other great apparel. The swaps have become so popular that larger venues are needed each time. [Pamela's Punch]
UGANDA—Certainly not exactly local, but we couldn't pass on the opportunity to highlight One Mango Tree. The company was founded after 'local lady' Halle Butvin traveled to the Sub-Saharan country of Uganda and now sources 30 female tailors in the war-torn part of the country to create tops, bottoms, and everything in-between. One Mango Tree's mission goes beyond profits and includes programs for employees and families. Their new lookbook, shot by DC photog Joshua Cogan, is out now. GEORGETOWN—Kiehl's has cranked its throttles and is heading to DC for the 3rd annual motorcycle LifeRide for amfAR. For 9 days, guys will be riding in the charity event, which ends in the city before the International AIDS Conference commences. They will be hitting the Kiehl's stores in Gtown and Tyson's, plus the EagleRider in Falls Church. [amfAR]
CONGRESS—Congress is helping out others and making something happen across party lines. (This is news by itself.) Female Senators and Reps are bringing their used suits and other professional clothes to support Dress For Less, "non-profit that provides interview and job-appropriate clothing to women with limited resources". With Dems and GOPers participating, it's a good time to bridge the divide (if only for a moment), and lend a helping hand. [The Hill Is Home]
DC—Kelly Killoren Bensimon, the former Real Housewife of New York City, has left Manhattan for DC to sign copies of her new book, I Can Make You Hot!. (Exclamation point is part of the title.) Bensimon has also dished up details on how to lose weight, look sexy, and why her mom's Irish soda bread is her favorite Sunday indulgence. [Washingtonian]
