Takoma Park residents are not known for their middle-of-the-road political stances. And sometimes the activist town can become a parody of itself, such as the recent controversy surrounding donated Hewlett-Packard computers to the town's library. Takoma Park is a "nuclear-free zone", which means "the city won’t do business with companies that make nuclear weapons". The city council voted to waive the computers despite the ban because "Mayor Bruce Williams (D) said it would have taken too much time and money to find an alternative to the computer system". Boom.
