This story has been repeating itself across the country, especially in the coastal cities: Young, college-educated adults are flocking to city neighborhoods and inner suburbs and bringing with them wine bars, espresso joints, boutiques, and many other bourgeois businesses. But only in DC can the subtext read: It's all funded with your American taxpayer money. As if there's no other reason people would be making money in this town. This narrative is highlighted in Time, but not everybody agrees with the premise. [Time (sub req'd); WCP]
