The folks at MAD LAB had some of this year's design fellows come up with ideas for the barely usable Uline Arena that sits just north of Union Station. Officially called The Washington Coliseum, it was originally an ice hockey rink for the defunct Washington Lions but has a greater claim as being the place The Beatles gave their first US concert only two days after their performance on the Ed Sullivan show. It has lost most of its sheen and now sits forlornly while people try to figure out what to do with it. Above is just one of the ideas from the design fellows about how to make the building a place where performances can be held, but click over for more examples including the intriguing concept for a 'circulation spine'.
