A former Virginia prison and its surrounding land is on the fast track to becoming a mixed-use development, including townhouses and apartments. The Lorton Reformatory and Penitentiary has already had part of its property turned into secondary school and a golf course, but the next step is figuring out how to turn the reformatory into 171 apartments and the penitentiary into offices (though, some might argue that offices already are penitentiaries). Alexander Co. is the design company charged with figuring out a way to do this while preserving the early-20th-century buildings. [WBJ; Fairfax Times; Official Site]
